S. Martinho de Dume is the main patron saint of the Archdiocese of Braga. It was confirmed, on December 14, 1984, by Pope John Paul II and he is responsible, in the Portuguese language, for introducing the days of the week as we know them. He decided, at the 1st Council of Braga in the year 561, to replace the pagan formulation, which gave the name to the days of the Roman gods, by the ecclesiastical one called “Fairs/Feiras”. The Portuguese language is the only Latin language that has completely abandoned pagan terminology.
