The Cathedral of Braga, one of the oldest in the entire Iberian Peninsula, has its own tradition: the “Rito Bracarense”, a liturgical rite unique to the city. During the Tridentine liturgical reform, Braga was able to keep its books, which were over 200 years old. With the strong contribution of D. Frei Bartolomeu dos Mártires, he managed to resist the introduction of the Roman rite, having been restored by the 1918 Synod and made mandatory in 1924. The Braga rite remains to this day, although its use has made optional since 1971.
